Do You Love What You Do?

By Dean On October 17, 2010 Under Affiliate Marketing, Blogs And Blogging, Make Money Online

Welcome Back To Dean Holland Dot Com... Be Sure To Look Around And Get Involved In The Discussions Going On!

Hey Hey :-)

Quick off topic mention before I begin todays post. I just returned home after watching the ‘Social Network’ movie, I LOVED it! Has my mind thinking on a BIG scale now and it’s made me realise you have to think BIG yourself. Go check it out if you haven’t seen it, interesting stuff.

But anyway maybe that’s another post sometime :-)

Today I want to discuss something I believe to be one of the major decisions you need to make when starting your own online empire, maybe in fact if you feel after this you need to make a change then be sure to take action to do so.

So I’ll begin by asking you…

“Do you love what you do?”

Or maybe I’ll rephrase that, “Do you feel passionate about what you’re doing online?”

Here’s the thing, there’s a ton of niches in this online space. Often people when getting started are led to believe that they need to be in the ‘Make Money Online’ niche, which just isn’t correct.

The bottom line is, when making that decision on what niche to build your business within it MUST be something you actually enjoy yourself and feel a passion to grow an income with.

First you can list all the interests you have, or the things you feel passionate about working with. At the end of the day if you want a scalable business you’re going to spend a large amount of time creating and growing it to a sizeable level.

Once you have your list it’s then you can begin some research. One of the most important factors to check for is that the market already exists, there’s no point trying to go after a niche that has little or no traffic.

Go where there’s plenty of traffic, which contrary to what many would say means looking to ensure there is SOME competition out there. If there’s people / products already there you can bet there’s money being made!

How do you check this exactly?

Some simple ways, search Google and see what shows up. Are there other sites selling related stuff? Are there adwords advertising paying for clicks in the sidebar?

Go search on www.Clickbank.com if your niche has digital products and see if there’s other products being sold, if there are you can even see how popular they are.

All these ways are simple and free :-)

At that point if everything is looking good – POW! You have niche to begin growing a business within, more importantly you have a business direction that you enjoy and will thrive off growing it to your desired level.

This is how you build a scalable online empire, by choosing a path at the initial stages that you know you will enjoy committing to long term. I’m sure you’ll agree when I say you want to build a VERY nice LIFE LONG income, not a quick hit that dies out right?

However here’s something important I want to share with you, it’s a skill and knowledge you NEED no matter what niche you wish to be in. In fact what I’m about to say to you many people confuse with being in the ‘make money online’ niche.

The skill you need is… MARKETING

When you learn marketing it really doesn’t matter what products you want to sell, and it doesn’t in the slightest make a difference what niche you wish to enter.

When you know how to market you can enter any niche and make money with any product!

Marketing as it’s own topic is vast and I plan on covering it a lot more over coming weeks with you so stay tuned and keep coming back to learn more helpful information.

As always you’re comments are greatly appreciated, and to all of those who plan on clicking that little Facebook ‘LIKE’ symbol… Thank you massively for sharing my content!

I know many of you have heard from my assistant Stephen recently because you got involved with the discussions here since I reopened Dean Holland Dot Com, cool stuff huh :-)

Great to interact with you, please leave your comment below.

    hey Dean,

Damn, you beat me to it lol. I was just making a post, say you mail came in and I stop to see what you are up to. I am about 500 words into it now lol. Thing is I have been on some chat rooms and find out that a lot of people are going into the IM niche even though they are just starting out.. My opinion is how can they teach someone something that they can’t really do themselves.

But the sad thing is most of the time it’s not their fault. Some of these folks told me their ‘mentor’ told them to do it. So you see at times they are spending money on coaching programs etc but still they are being taught the wrong way.

I hope you readers learn something from your post. Find something they are passionate about, spend time to know the market and give them a solution to their problem.

    take care

Very important info Dean. I was blogging for 8 months in niches that I wasn’t really passionate about without making any money. Within two weeks of switching to a niche that I was interested in I made my first sale!

If your not interested in what you are doing it is so hard to find the motivation to take the necessary action!

Great advice about looking into the profitability of niches and I completely agree with pursuing what you’re passionate about. It’s not for nothing that they say, “when you love what you do, it doesn’t seem like work!”

As I sit here looking at the first check I’ve made online for the princely sum of $1.06 I think you’d better love it or go away. I figured 2010 to be a building/learning year so I have no regrets. But I’m keeping that check right in front of me for inspiration!!!!

Hi Dean I’ve been studying online marketing for almost a year now and learned so much. I studied under Jonathan Budd, Katie Frieling, Kary Rogney, and now Adam Short at NPC. My biggest problem was that I thought that I had to know everything before I got started (Wow was I wrong) I should have been making money a long time ago. But that’s ok, I now know that I will succeed and have become very passionate about this. My cousin and I are entering a highly competetive niche but I know with work I will crush it. We are building a membership site charging a minimal price for super high quality training in a wellness niche that can change so many lives. Lately I’ve been following you because you came highly recommended to me and believe me I know that learning is key to becoming everything you can be in this tough industry. I say that because I’ve tried so many plug and play things and not one of them has worked. Anyway thanks Dean and I look forward to all your upcoming posts. Have a great one and thanks for all you do. Morris Murphy

    Hey Up Dean,

It is easier if you go into a niche that you are passionate about, just make sure their is a market for it though. It’s no good going into a niche that people are not searching for or there is just a small amount of interest.

Health, Wealth and Love are the biggest contenders. Are they a saturated market. I don’t think so, you just need to think out of the box and offer the market something different. Put your own brand mark onto it.

Another couple of places to look for a certain niche or what is hot right now is Amazon and E-bay. Go see what is popular and what people are buying. You can get a ton of information from these too sites.

Also another is when you have found a niche do a google search. “Niche Forums”. If your niche has a dedicated forum then you know there are a lot of people wanting answers to problems. We as marketers just give them the solution.

    Cheers

    Craig

    Hi Dean:

I think this is sound and good advice. Life is much easier if you are doing something you are passionate about. However, I do feel it may make a choice or two before you realize what your real passion is.

Thus, you may be involved in a couple of different niches before you settle into the one that holds your passion. And I think to do that is o.k..

The trick is as you say marketing direction, if you follow a sound business model, the business model will work in most any niche. The secret is to just take action, not just a little action, a lot of action. Learn as you go, just like you say.

Thanks again for the great info.

    Respectfully,

    Peggy

    Hey Dean,

Great post my man. You really got across the things you need to be a success online. MARKETING!

You briught up a brillinat point about the “Money making online” niche, it really doenst have to be this one you choose. For what seemed like ages I had focused on this trying (and failing) to make money, it wasnt until I looked to a different niche that the bucks started to roll in.

All in all mate a very good post, you have a really cool way of getting things across,

    Keep it easy buddy,

I found this worthwhile. Of course there IS a problem if what you enjoy doing will never be a profitable niche. I considered trainspotting, which I do NOT do, then realised there are possibilities there. But if you are interested in anomalies and human behaviour it will take longer than more mainstream products

    Hi Dean,

The entry point that most people getting started online look into is almost by defualt the “Make Money Online” niche as that’s usually the first search term that is typed in by many … “How can I make money online?”

Tap that into the the search engine of choice and a Pandora’s Box of options opens up to engulf the newbie with a myriad of “get rich overnight” options ! LOL

Maybe it’s something we all need to go briefly go through just to be aware of the ways NOT to get started online and you are right … the required skill set to become successful is NOT how to make money online but how to “market a product or service to a hungry market”

Getting that right is the task at hand for successfully “Making Money Online” BUT the big problem is that there IS a big learning curve and no shortcuts!

So, spending some time and effort researching and learning from people who are already working in niches that may well be associated with the various aspects of the ‘how to make money online’ niche like getting traffic (your ‘little secret’) are going to be of use later on … even if the final chosen niche is far removed from the Make Money Online arena ? :-)

    Hey Dean

Joined up to the Total Traffic System that you and Adam Spiel started earlier this year. What’s confusing is that after joining I received a whole lot of emails from you promoting other products. I found others (after spending more money) did the same. I agree though that marketing is definitely a skill one has to learn and apply in this area to get ahead and start generating income as well as a niche important enough for someone to be motivated to do primarily before the money. Look forward to getting more info off you and reading other comments too. I am enrolling in a marketing course too in my quest for future financial security for my family and true friends.

    Hi Dean

Good advice but what happens when what your are passionate about is already well covered. One of my passion is dog training; there are so many people already selling e-books, vidoes, training secrets that I cannot see where I can make a difference.

The other hobby is photography and that niche is more than covered. So what is left for me? IM I hope which I could get passionate about when the money starts coming in.

    Anyway thanks for the post.

Great Blog,Being passionate about a niche and making money can sometimes seems like a contridiction.
A passion for “making money” may be one reason for the popularity of the niche with the same title.
However perhaps a mindset of developing a passion for providing “real solutions of value” that fulfil desires, wants or needs may also be a solution in it self.
For me, Project Mangagement is the real conundrum that no one seems to talk about.
Along with Clarity of “Vision” and working to “Strengths.”
Surely there’s an overal business success philosophy / model that facillitates successful Internet Marketing? For creating real sustainable IM income streams.

Dean, how were you able to achieve so much success so quickly…

    What’s your story?

    Thanks for starting this Blog

I can talk so easily and confidently about it..!!

I agree with what “Jon” mentioned above, do what you love and the money will flow.. and I’ll back that up with focus your energies on giving value as opposed to receiving money, if you give enough value, the money will keep rolling!

    Great Job Dean ;)

    Hi Dean

Its funny you mention this, only a few weeks back Paul Wilson and I asked ourselves why we were so focussed on the IM Niche with the ever expanding crowd (not to mention the issues with Ad Swaps etc) and decided the best way forward is to use our skills to concentrate on smaller niches so as to spread our focus.

Rather than just talk about it I did my own research and built 10 brand new niche sites with landing pages last week. Now I have to get back on the wagon and get the articles flowing and then do some serious SEO work.

The key to this whole thing is following a process – simple

Mainly because no one was willing to truly help me understand the process or even tell the true story of how to succeed. I have to admit I am in information overload at the present time but determined to wade thorough it. I am thrilled with your commitment to help and I finally feel sure I will be able to support myself fiancially soon. Believe me, social security is NOT ample to survive on. Hi Dean, Just reviewed the home page and I really enjoyed the video’s. I am in the processs of the 30 questions, titles, and researching keywords. I signed up for your RSS and friends already. I am just waiting until I get the money to get my autoresponder, I have a Blog site and a website, I just don’t know how to get it up and running. I also have to finish the sales and thank you pages before I can publish it. My social security check just does not cover your training program and all the extras that seen to be needed to start this business. But, I will get the training completed one way or the other. And I do not know if the webstarts site has cpanel hosting. How do I find out?

  39. Great job on the new website Dean. Even the time you took for the re-design shows your passion.

When I know I have that passion for what I’m doing, is how I end up going to sleep at night. Before I go to sleep, I have fully outlined & planned the next day. So, when I wake up, I’m fired up and ready to take on the days activities.
And the reason I know I’m fired up, because I only take about 4 hours of sleep, and when I wake, I got the laptop right next to my bed. Instead of hitting the alarm clock, I’m clicking the ON Button, as the first thing to do when I wake.
Additionally, it’s having that Silo Focus factor, where you can see the finish line & your goal is to do whatever it takes to get there. That’s where success starts.

Hi Dean, I am very passionate about learning to get established on the internet. I have extensive knowledge in the field of natural health and wellness and I want to be able to promote ways to people make a good living financially. Also, I had difficulty with the special Social package you promoted in the training module 1, so, I called the help desk and talked to Chad. What a gracious, helpful young man. He was patient and should get a pat on the back for a “well done job”.

Great post and all too true, its easy to waste time and effort on things you arent passionate about and over time it will shine through. Your passion will fire you to a new level and come across in your communication and enthusiasm for the niche/topic/product. Therefore its much easier to be genuinely convincing in your marketing. Just need to hone those interests now….
    All the best

Hello, Yoichi, I know exactly what you feel like. I too am in the same place you appear to be. I have spent countless somes of money trying to achieve at least some money in the online market. Expecially since I can no longer work at the career I chose, nursing. But, my mother use to say, ” failure is not failure, it is a learning experience, so what have you learned? Now, use it as a tool to fix the problem and dust yourself off and try again”. I always seemed to run out of money before I could see any profit at all. But, with this system and the extensive help Dean is giving, I feel I can finally see positive results, with alot of hard consistant work on my part. Hang in there and keep in touch if you like.

You definately have to be passionate with what you are doing to be successful.

Its what gets you up in the morning!

    Hi Dean,

Good luck with the new launch. I have told my subscribers about it.
If I had to offer any advice to the newbie it would be that you do not have to be a master of all trades. Do what you do best and outsource the rest.
As for passion, well you need it for sure. However I prefer the word motivation. Motivation can be born from both vision and need.
Just looking up through the comments, and I can see you have some great people following you. Really good to see. I love success.

    hey Dean,

Now I have a passion to leave the 40-hour bit and a motivation to do more of what I love. I think your system pushes people myself included out of the comfort zone then…bang…something good happens. New comfort zone – CC

    Hi Dean,

To be interested in your niche is a MUST as I know all too well. I have entered niches that I saw as a potential goldmine and fell flat on my arse as I knew nothing about the niche!

My money comes solely from topics and interests that I am very interested in.

    Just my 2 penneth!!

    Jon
