Producing Productivity & Dealing With Distractions
Welcome Back To Dean Holland Dot Com... Be Sure To Look Around And Get Involved In The Discussions Going On!
It’s a common problem, believe me I know. I’ve worked with 1000′s of people in my trainings and I’ve yet to come across someone that has not had issues with this at some point.
Heck I know it’s an issue with me, not just an issue of the past but an on-going issue that I have to constantly find ways to deal with.
So we’re essentially talking about being productive because you have managed to put things in place ( or in fact remove them ) in your life or schedule for you to be able to achieve more online.
No two people’s live are the same, each and every one of us has different commitments with our time. This means I cannot give you a guaranteed solution because you ultimately have to review your own situation and see how it can be made more efficient.
However what I can do is identify some key factors that are known to me to be common distractions that prevent productivity. You may find you agree with these yourself –
Common Problem #1 – Emails
If you’re anything like I used to be then you’ll be receiving tens, if not hundreds of emails every single day into your inbox. Let me guess, mostly hyped up sales type emails too yes?
There are MANY marketers out there that will just slam you with nothing but sales emails, the ones trying to push you to buy something. These really hold no value for you, and look at how much time you may spend actually working your way through these mails! ( Let alone the cost of buying some of them )
But look let me just say, as marketers that is our job. We market products to targeted prospects to make our money, just like you will do too. HOWEVER there should be a lot of valuable content coming from them too, just like I do here at Dean Holland Dot Com.
So how to deal with it?
Firstly you need to look at those lists your on and decide, is this person providing me with value or are they purely trying to make money from me.
If they do provide you with content and value ( as well as sales email of course ) then that is someone worth listening to so remain on their list and read their emails.
If however it is the later and you only receive sales email after sales email then maybe it’s time to click that ‘Unsubscribe’ link at the bottom of the email.
The bottom line is you should not be spending a large chunk of your time reading emails, once or twice per day is plenty. If you’re spending too long doing that then make a change or you will not see the progress you want.
Common Problem #2 – Information Overload
Yep it’s a biggie and I’ve yet to find someone who hasn’t experienced this. You too right? If not then you’re lucky and this could very well help you avoid it, but I’m certain at some point you’ll get a dose of it
Normally it’s caused by simply overloading ourselves with too much at once. Often we have SO MANY ebooks and products sat on our hard drive we just don’t know where to start.
There’s only 1 thing to do, take all those products and all that information and pop it into a new folder, call it something like ‘Training Products’ or whatever you want, either way just scoop it all together and pop it into a single location.
Now just choose one area of training to learn, and learn… and LEARN!
Then take action, and never stop taking action until you see results. Don’t be tempted to start on something new or something else until you’re seeing good results from your chosen avenue of training.
Are you seeing the connection here between information overload and emails?
If you’re on a ton of those email list and you’re receiving floods of emails each week trying to get you to buy new products of course you’re going to be overloaded right? Makes perfect sense
That’s why it’s important you eliminate these problems or you will never see the progress you so badly want ( And need! )
Obviously there are a lot of other problems you will face that you’ll need to deal with, the thing you have to remember is that you’re building a real BUSINESS. This isn’t a quick fix, there is no magic button to instant success.
Sure it can be done in a very short space of time, I think I myself have been a good example of that being possible for the average person. But it took real commitment and a strong desire to achieve this, you must be the same if you want to see real progress.
So what to do now?
Assess your available time that you can commit to growing your internet business. Like I’ve mentioned we all have different commitments to our schedule, family life, pets, day jobs and all of those thing come into play.
BUT… These are reasons to plan, not excuses for lack of progress.
So look at your own weekly schedule and make a record of what time you can work on your business and on what days. Then more importantly you need to make sure you do close out all other distractions at those times and work.
Remove Potential Issues
After commenting on this post you should also assess whether emails and information overload are issues for you and take IMMEDIATE steps to eradicate them along with any other problems you currently have that prevent your progress.
Follow Someone Successful
I TOTALLY can say, hand on heart that having a mentor changed EVERYTHING for me with my online business. I had spent years getting nowhere fast and around $60,000 on credit cards and loans before I decided I had to follow the training of someone that was where I wanted to be.
That’s why I advise you do the same, we all have at least one or two marketers that we like and respect the way they run their businesses. You need to know, like and TRUST the person you learn from ( This will be YOU people are looking to learn from not far from today if you take action! )
Hopefully you respect and get many benefits here at Dean Holland Dot Com with the content I share. If you’re a new reader to my blog and to me then it’s more than likely you’re at the stage of getting to know me which is fantastic and I’m very happy to get that opportunity.
If you’ve been a follower or reader of mine for some time then you may be at the stage ( I hope ) of liking and trusting me as someone who can lead you to higher profits in your business.
I’ve just recently had an idea and I think you’re going to really like it, more importantly you’re going to benefit from it. But like I say, it’s something I’ve not long thought up so I’m going to be working day and night to make it happen
Watch this space on that one… For now it’s time for you to produce some long term productivity by dealing with your distractions and planning your time to put in the work.
Yes WORK, not really what ‘most’ marketers will say right? Well I’m telling you the truth and the facts, it takes work and effort to build a real business.
So get to it and start making it happen, but first make sure you leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts and actions.
By the way, if you’re a ‘Friend Of Dean Holland Dot Com’ I’ll be sending you a new audio training from an interview I just did about traffic generation in the next 24 – 48 hours. Be sure to look out for it, if you’re not yet part of the Dean Holland community then make sure you join us HERE, it’s 100% free and it’s all about me helping you succeed.
I look forward to your comment, speak soon

Hey Deano
Great post bro…
Another thing I’d like to add is when your working from home there seems to be a tendency to get distracted by things around the house… I.E family members… video games… TV.
Soon as you can afford it, It’s best to find a place you can work from outside of home. Something I’ll be looking into sometime soon.
Another thing i find useful is using countdown timers to work in 50 minute block sessions, It frees up your mind to concentrate at the task at hand.
One more thing that helps is turning OFF instant messengers and your email client, and mobile phones etc.
Again.. great post and this should help people get a alot more work done in less time!

Hi Dean,
Love the new blog. If I get one of your Friends of Dean Holland credit cards will it give me access to people in high places?
Seriously, though, it’s great to see you pointing out the biggest problems faced by everyone when they first start out marketing (and beyond!) – e-mails!
I KNOW I have to get off of so many lists as it’s a real time waster, but it’s a lot easier to sign up than to get off isn’t it? I just end up deleting loads because I haven’t time to open them and then feel guilty.
We’ve all only got so much time though, so I guess I’ve got to seriously get down to business instead of continuing with busyness!
Keep up the great work and take care.

Dean, this is true for every marketer I have spoken to.
Focusing on one program and/or idea at a time will work for most of us.
Yes, we need to schedule our time wisely to keep on track for success.

Hi Dean
I agree totally with your comments above. I must have unsubscribed from 100 +++ lists to date.
Some people make it very awkward to unsubscribe as you ahve to sign into your account with them to do so and not just hit an unscribe link in the email so they just get deleted whenever they send an email.
The trouble is every time you sign up to get a “FREE” product you go onto another list or lists and thus the emails keep coming. This could as you say lead to spending a fortune for products which promise the earth but in the main fail to deliver.

Spot on mate! If they are providin’g me with value ( and the occasional ‘recommendation’) no problem at all.
But I especially detest this ‘email swap’ nonsense that so many of these toe rags get up to e.g. “Visit my mate Fred’s site – he’s written this amazing Free Report” – so now you’re on Fred’s list too and he does the same with his mate Bert and his “unbelievable free access report”.
Exponentially it all now kicks in and you are getting 100′s of e-mails every day!
What these clowns don’t realise is that the first one you signed up with has lost all his credibility as far as you’re concerned.
I’m a professional, full time online chap and it drives me NUTS! It’s good to know however that the twits that go this route and up with a big list of people who don’t even bother ( I really HOPE!) to open their emails, let alone buy something from them!
Another reason why I’ll never be an online millionaire I guess :-;

Some great pointers there – as like everyone else I struggle with info overload and emails – Im just about getting myself out of the consumer mindset and starting to focus on applying all the training and products that I have bought to date (no more – for now – unless they complement the action im taking, automate part of it, or add value and more advanced strategies!!).
Im also in the process of re-doing my email accounts so that I have one for sales promos from selected marketers, a quasi-swipe file I guess, so that I can see what is being promoted and how and why, then my main one for essential mail only. Then I intend to spend say a max of 45 mins per day on emails and no more.
Finally Im implementing a tip I learnt at Saj P’s Affiliate Millionaires Bootcamp in that Im working out my most productive times and focussing effort then with no distractions (no tv and phones).
Look forward to your further info and tips on what works for you.Cheers

I totally agree with you Dean, because the most of us if not all, specially in the beginning, we have had facing these problems principally because we never stop on seeking for short cuts or looking for the magic formula to be rich overnight, instead of focusing on a single niche(micro niche) previously funded, and which proved to be commercially viable and stick it with until you get the best results you can, then repeat the same process with the next.
Now the best and smartest way to succeed on any kind of business is finding the most successful business man you can, in that niche you want to start your business venture and persuade him to teach you how to do it, then, if you are lucky, follow the exact footsteps and do exactly what he says to do.
Great stuff, keep it up.

Hi Dean
Totally agree with the distractions from e mails issue, I think there is also merit in how you are on the day, Thursday I got a massive amount done, Outsourced a raft of things but come Friday morning my mind was all over the place
You’re right about opting out of peoples lists who just sell all the time, I get really annoyed by people who just lie in their subject lines, instant unsubscribe for me
Keep up the good work, the ethical side is gathering momentum in no small way and those who lead it will be remembered
Thanks Tony

Hey Dean, Great post…As a fairly new IMer I have struggled, and still am struggling with Wasting time on tasks that aren’t producing $ or even directly contributing to that effort… and Info overload…
You are absolutely correct in identifying email as a major drain on productivity… I recently wrote an article for my blog citing exactly the same problems and their affect on one’s FOCUS.
With advances in technology and therefore systems and methods, for generating online income, it becomes increasingly difficult to overlook the many FREE and really good Products which are offered these days…
I have so many systems, ebooks, tools, PLR, tricks and tips, etc, etc. that I barely have time to look at any of it let alone utilize it… All from hundreds of emails daily…
Don’t get me wrong, all of this info hasn’t gone to waste… I have learned many, many ways to MMO and perhaps the most important lesson of all…
No matter how good all of this stuff on my hard drive is, collecting it is only holding me back from doing the things that are truly necessary for Generating Long Term Online Income…
That is, as you stated, “eliminate these problems or you will never see the progress you so badly want ( And need! )”…
So, all that stuff is now on an external hard drive… My email subscriptions have been pared to only a few who have really given true value… I’m working on my Blog and trying to build a list…
At the end of each nite I jot down 5 things that I want to accomplish the next day and FOCUS on completing that list before moving on to other things.
Sorry, I didn’t intend to write an entire article here just to let you know I appreciate your efforts.
Should have just said
Thanks

emails are the worst – I shopped for a way to earn money on the web because i live in the countryside and enjoy working from home. Now i am receiving literally hundreds of emails a day. I have been un-subscribing an hour each night, but the problem is that most people now JV with other people who Jv with even more people. No matter what I do the emails are not stopping. What is very annoying too are the headlines – like “re your paypal account” or “per your request”, or “urgent request!!!” or “waiting for your answer”. These kinds of headlines finally caused me to report spam – i have had it. The others of into gmail Archive (thank you gmail!!!). And what i really must learn to do – is archive everything, and every now and then – (I have never gone to archive to look for something – NOW 27,614 emails in there) I just have to purge all of them – SO SCARY! Emails are my enemies.

Thanks for the free information and I look forward to your response on my Turbo traffic challenges which you are working on. BTW – any luck?

Good advice Dean. As your newest member (yesterday) coincidentally before I joined I unsubscribed myself from at least 60 lists; you read right – SIXTY. So I have big hopes that you’ll not deliver crap like all the others did.
So email lists – Check.
Overwhelm due to constantly flitting from program to program? I haven’t got this one down yet. But it’s on my radar. I’ve gotten refunds from the worst of the recent crap I signed to. My antenna is now sharpened to not get sucked in through the sales letter hype.
Point 3 – mentor. Care to share publicly or privately who your mentor is? My goodness there are some self-styled loser mentors out there in IM-land.
Who is there left to trust?

“Another reason why I’ll never be an online millionaire I guess :-; ”
- Why not? We can make it big online WITHOUT adopting the lazy email marketing habits of the guys with big lists. Suggestion: craft a content-rich regular newsletter, perhaps as a colored PDF – stand out from the stupid.
Bill:
“I’m working on my Blog and trying to build a list…”
- And the question I’ve got for you Bill is – once you’ve built it what are you going to do with that list. Hopefully guard it as though your life depends on it’s oxygen. It does.
Dean:

Hi Dean,
Thank you for the sharing. Very helpful.
I guess, internet is sometimes a bit technical if not lucky count. No matter how focus we have been, there are things we just need to have someone(expert or master) sitting with us, points out our mistakes so that we can amend in time to see progress….. A mentor, you are right…. Thank you again.

Hi Dean, it has been a long time I received a mail from you!
This new blog is a great change from the usual rot I get from Guru Spammers. Yes, it’s true emails are a great distraction. I prefer to check my inbox only on Sunday mornings, so, I can work peacefully on the other days. The other major step I took was to not join any list. I have started giving direct downloads instead of circuitous paths needing 4 to 5 times opening of mails, confirming them etc.
Hope this finds you well. Thanks.

Hi Dean,
You hit the nail on the head with this blog post. On Friday I got through 1000+ emails in gmail, 200+ in inbox hotmail 100+ in junkmail hotmail, 100+ in inbox (website mail) & 50+ in junkmail (website) & then yahoomail as well. And most of the time there are at least 600+ across all mailboxes – but I have opting out of heaps of lists but they keep coming. The problem isn’t so much with the sales letters wanting me to buy, but with the free content that everyone is giving away & I am so sick of it all and wonder if anyone is actually selling anything anymore! So now days I scim through the lot, select all & delete because otherwise I’m here all day doing mails & nothing else.
As far as a mentor is concerned, would love to have one but can’t afford one on my pension, so you can be it with your great free content! I thank you sincerely for your help so far.
Also as far as programs etc – mate I’ve got a computer full of free stuff collected over the last 1 1/2 yrs, most unread & that includes programs.
I am currently working on 2 ebooks as my own products to sell and give away & I get great comments on my blog, but no-one opts into my list or take the free ebook I have on there.
But I refuse to give up & I buy nothing & try to learn what I can, so wish me luck with my new products when they are finished.
Thanks again,
Jannie K

I may not have kids but I do have a senior citizen mother who is active and cranky at times whic makes living with her a challenge. A job thats ok for the moment yet has its thorny points. But my biggest challenge has been meeting the challenge of coping with natural disasters! I live in the caribbean and we have seen a side swipe of H.Earl and now had a DELUVIAN over 72 hours of constant rain just end. Everything is mold city right now. Dealing with that has been a challenge.

Thanks Dean. I’ve been banging my head against the wall in IM for too long now and part of the problem is the 2 things you’ve mentioned here. However, I think there may be a deeper problem and these are symptoms — I’m afraid of making a mistake!
@Eva, be careful about marking emails as spam if you’ve signed up for them in the first place. They may be annoying, but technically, they’re not spam. However, if you are getting emails after you unsubscribe or from someone you didn’t subscribe to that is fine. You shouldn’t be getting emails from the JV partners of people you subscribe too unless you follow the link and subscribe to that list too.
I regularly unsubscribe from lists and I’ve found that there is very little problem with marketers continuing to send emails once I’ve done so.

It is a constant battle for newbie’s. I myself signed up for free reports etc and then I seemed to end up on loads of lists without realizing. I have over the last few months started to unsubscribe but I still have around 100 in the inbox and 700 in spam. On a daily basis. I think the only real way to solve the problem is to get a new email address and subscribe to the emails you really want to read and give value. I will keep in my case a handful as these are the ones I look forward to reading, yours being one of them Dean. I now use an online stopwatch to control how much time I spend reading emails. If anyone is interested it is free but I think you have to provide your email address but it has helped me you can find it at
http://www.online-stopwatch.com
I must say I love the new blog.

I have a different strategy.
I deliberately stay on a lot of email lists as I prefer to rely on the wisdom of my subconscious which helps me to open only those emails that are of value to me. As long as I program my mind to help me reach the results I want, this strategy works very well for me.
The few minutes I use every day to delete all those emails that don’t catch my attention, are certainly worth the value I get out of this strategy. I would probably use a lot more time searching the web each time I need to develop myself and my business. This way I can focus on the tasks needed to be done, without risking the distractions that follows searching the web.
This has also led me to end up on lists of great Internet marketers with high ethics in how they do their business. To me these wonderful people are important role models and I would probably not have found them otherwise.

Hey Dean,
Great post my friend!
Productivity has always been a huge issue with me… I can procrastinate along with the best of em’.
What I’ve found works is having my own personal ‘accountability blog’.
Basically it’s a private password protected blog where each day (or night before) I’ll write a post with the day’s 4 most important tasks that’ll make me the most money.
Then I’ll work in blocks of 90 mins until those 4 tasks have been completed.
If a new task comes to mind during the first 4 tasks then I’ll add it to the end of the queue (unless it’s urgent).
What’s also great about an ‘accountability blog’ is that you can give access to a friend(s) so that you can give each other a kick up the backside to make sure that you get stuff done!
Speak soon,
Ben

Hi Dean, I am new to everything to do with the internet, I find it all overwelming. I joined facebook but don’t go on it has I don’t have anything to chat about. Joined ebay because I have got things to sell but afraid to do that even, incase there are hidden costs etc. The most I do is check my emails, mainly people trying to sell me something like you said. Which I have downloaded some freebies but that is as far as I get with it. The rest of the time I am just browzing has I have got no confidense and no one to share my interest to make money on line. By that I mean a friend who can sit down beside me and go through everything with me step by step. I am not working through ill health and have no spare income to get started. Is there any hope for me or do you think I should give up? Isn’t blogging and twittering etc abit like chatting on face book or texing? Sorry for going on so long just wanted to give you as much information as I could. I hope you can help as it seems by your video thats what you want to do and I think I might be able to follow step by step instuctions from you. Where I have not been able to with other internet marketers. Thank you for taking the time to read this

Hi Dean,
All of this make sense and I wish I was there. You see competing for quality time only really becomes an issue once you are on to something that is really working for you. Once you have a program which you know that if I spend more time here, it can be converted into sales later.
I am still struggeling to just get one program to work for me. This is the reason why I got involved in the TurboTrafficSystem, I was hoping that this system will help me to get something to work.
Untill that is happening one tends to want to leave the door open so you don’t miss out on something else that could have been the kickstart you needed.
Hopefully I will get there soon!

Too right Dean.
I have unsubscribed from tons of mailing lists and stopped signing up for FREE products.
Even if I do, I unsubscribe immediately afterwards.
It’s only AFTER I did all of this did I receive my first payment online.
The first was for just $48.50.
But recently I received a 498.50 commission on a product I didn’t even know I was promoting!
I can see this works but you like Dean says avoid the distractions and start taking action.

Planning is so important in building a business, and working out where you have time to work on your business is a massive part of that. As you said we all have different amount of time to spend on our business and it’s about how we use that time efficiently that will make or break our businesses!
Thanks again mate

Dean, this was a timely discovery in my e-mail box.
Wouldn’t have found you if I hadn’t signed up for your e-mails. Tells me I made the right decision that day…
Tech support at Niche-Blueprint told me a year ago that the #1 cause for failure was distraction.
She was so right for me, so far.
Yes, I am one to buy on a promise and a video. Searching and opting in, doesn’t mean I will understand much of it, when I watch the video.
People complain that they have too many programs sitting gathering dust while they continue to search for what works for them.
All I can say is that I learn as I go.
I suppose as a newbie, I can admit that lack of education has cost me.
What I have learned, though, is that all this is still so new and the internet will continue to change.
I will continue to be challenged by what I don’t know yet for the rest of my internet career.
Kind of excites me to know I won’t get bored.
Just keeping a good attitude.
Common sense tells me that this is where the economy is headed.
This is where the planet is finding strength.
This is where I want to be doing business.
Thus, distractions do slow me down. What is true is that distractions can not be the excuse.
They must be the details to prepare for.
Thank you for the idea to file all the offers and etc. in a separate file.
Sort of like cleaning house, it will improve the view.
As far as scheduling time, I agree. I get time with morning coffee and two days a week to stay home for internet only. Just not seeing the results that I hope for. The dreaded e-mail box that sucks me in……….
This schedule has been a big improvement from last year though it means less income from my day job.
A life worth fighting for.
I understand the stresses of being on my own but I wish to be competitive in this world and the internet is my choice for now.
If we see the thing growing, it will be what we work harder at.
I believe the business that pays me will always get most of my attention,
no matter what the distraction is.
Good luck to all who are here to share and grow and make a good living doing what they love.

Hi Dean,
I found your article to be excellent sound advice.
I get tons of email in my inbox per day and I know I can’t get to all of them and I only spend about 10 to 15 minutes a day scanning to find what maybe important and responding to them.
I had to teach myself not be be distracted from my business although there are somethings in life that we have no control over and these factors are taken into consideration.
You are right there are a lot of good products and information out there, I was at one point and time one of those people that would allow myself to be distracted with the overload of information in my email inbox that this past year I taught myself to focus on one thing that is most important time me and my business.
Thanks for your excellent article keep them coming.

Man did you describe where I am at today…lol. I do consulting from home to remote locations and distrations are a part of every day. I have yet to use the gigs of internet marketing tools and processes to grow my business, which is a little frustrating. I think mostly because I am unsure how to leverage them. I suppose name recognition would be one area that could be worked. A blog might be another, although the copany I work with already does this and gets blog ideas and content from me as a source. LinkedIn is another venue that I basically give away the keys to the knowledge vault in my head. The thing is that although this is paying the bills, it is not really my true passion. It is something I can get passionate about at times, but not sustained passion.

Hey Dean,
I totally agree with you. Heck I have the email problem everyday, btw, I just done checking my email lol.
Another problem is the constant checking of accounts to see if you made more money. All those stuff can really kill productivity.. Thanks for the post man and as always, you know I am rooting for you!

Hi Dean,
Could not get through support, so I thought I would send a message this way. Did you know that both the aweber banner and the hosting are going to aweber?

Hi Dean,
I’m a newbie in the sense that I’m still learning.
I have hardly done anything on online like this in the past so ALL of it has been a very steep learning curve. It also doesn’t help that I’m such a technophobe!
I am prepared to work hard but I have to learn on the right things, things that will be productive not just innocent looking time wasters, in other words I need to learn how to Focus.
Thanks for your tips, I’ll come back for more.
I picked up quite a few tips from your article I’m definitely suffering from information overload. I’ve decided that I now have to sit down and really concentrate. I need to read the different reports that I have got and put together in one place all the various aspects of this business so I don’t have to go searching all through my hard drive for the relevant information I need when I get stuck.
The emails bit I have just started to sort, I’m finding that most of them are constantly promotions of one form or another and the same promotions as well, it’s actually starting to get a bit boring, unfortunately, just occasionally you do come across something really useful!
